A francophone from <a title=\"Montreal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montreal\">Montreal<\/a>, she sings mostly in French and has been credited with &#8220;bringing <i>la chanson fran\u00e7aise<\/i> to a whole new generation of Quebec youth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Born in the province of <a title=\"Quebec\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quebec\">Quebec<\/a>, B\u00e9atrice Martin started playing the piano when she was only three years old. She entered the <a title=\"Conservatoire de musique du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conservatoire_de_musique_du_Qu%C3%A9bec_%C3%A0_Montr%C3%A9al\">Conservatoire de musique du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al<\/a> at the age of nine and studied there for five years.<\/p>\n<p>At the age of 15, she played as a keyboardist in the <a title=\"Post-hardcore\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Post-hardcore\">post-hardcore<\/a> band December Strikes First which starred her best friend, Francis, who would later become the subject of the song &#8220;Francis&#8221; on her debut album.<sup>[<i><a title=\"Wikipedia:Citation needed\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citation_needed\">citation needed<\/a><\/i>]<\/sup> Martin had a brief stint as keyboardist for <a title=\"Bonjour Brumaire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bonjour_Brumaire\">Bonjour Brumaire<\/a> from late 2007 to April 2008.<\/p>\n<h3>2007\u20132009: Debut album and first success<\/h3>\n<p>In a report broadcast on French television, Martin explained that she chose the name &#8220;C\u0153ur de pirate&#8221; to appear not &#8220;as an isolated musician, but to get a band identity from the start.&#8221; She released her debut album <i><a title=\"C\u0153ur de pirate (album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C%C5%93ur_de_pirate_%28album%29\">C\u0153ur de pirate<\/a><\/i> on September 16, 2008 on <a title=\"Dare to Care Records\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dare_to_Care_Records\">Grosse Bo\u00eete<\/a>. Described as &#8220;rather simple&#8221; musically, it mostly featured Martin&#8217;s voice and piano playing with some minor additional instrumentation.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2009, Martin attracted wider media attention when a photographer from <a title=\"Quebec City\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quebec_City\">Quebec City<\/a>, Francis Vachon, used the song &#8220;Ensemble&#8221; as the soundtrack to a <a title=\"Viral video\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viral_video\">viral video<\/a> on <a title=\"YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/YouTube\">YouTube<\/a> entitled &#8220;Time lapse of a baby playing with his toys&#8221;, leading to coverage on <i><a title=\"Good Morning America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Good_Morning_America\">Good Morning America<\/a><\/i>, <a title=\"Perez Hilton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perez_Hilton\">Perez Hilton<\/a>&#8216;s website, <i><a title=\"The Globe and Mail\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Globe_and_Mail\">The Globe and Mail<\/a><\/i> and elsewhere.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C%C5%93ur_de_pirate#cite_note-6\">[<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>2009\u20132011: Side projects Pearls and Armistice<\/h3>\n<p>In March 2009, Martin released a song in English, &#8220;One for Me&#8221;, under the name Pearls on <a title=\"MySpace\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MySpace\">MySpace<\/a>. In a later interview she described the project as a joke and said she did not plan to continue it, though she did not not rule out the possibility of releasing music in English at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2009, she made a special appearance of <a title=\"CBC Radio\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CBC_Radio\">CBC Radio<\/a>&#8216;s <i><a title=\"Q (radio show)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Q_%28radio_show%29\">Q<\/a><\/i> radio show with <a title=\"Jian Ghomeshi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jian_Ghomeshi\">Jian Ghomeshi<\/a>. She performed her single &#8220;Ensemble&#8221; and a new song, titled &#8220;Place de la r\u00e9publique&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Martin performed with <a title=\"Jay Malinowski\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jay_Malinowski\">Jay Malinowski<\/a> of <a title=\"Bedouin Soundclash\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bedouin_Soundclash\">Bedouin Soundclash<\/a> in May 2010 on <i>Q<\/i>, and talked about collaborating with him in the future. She was later featured in a <a title=\"Bedouin Soundclash\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bedouin_Soundclash\">Bedouin Soundclash<\/a> song, &#8220;Brutal Hearts&#8221;, on the <i><a title=\"Light the Horizon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light_the_Horizon\">Light the Horizon<\/a><\/i>. Martin, Malinowski, and several members of the American rock band <a title=\"The Bronx (band)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Bronx_%28band%29\">The Bronx<\/a> subsequently collaborated on a five-song EP under the band name <a title=\"Armistice (band)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armistice_%28band%29\">Armistice<\/a>, which was released on February 15, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2011 to present: <i>Blonde<\/i> and upcoming English project<\/h3>\n<p>On March 27, 2011, Martin revealed via her Facebook page that she was to return to the studio to commence work on her second album the following day. Her second album, <i><a title=\"Blonde (album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blonde_%28album%29\">Blonde<\/a><\/i>, was released on November 7, 2011 in both digital and hard copy versions. &#8220;Adieu&#8221; and &#8220;Golden Baby&#8221; were released as singles from this LP.<\/p>\n<p>After announcing her pregnancy in February 2012, Martin stopped touring during the second half of the year and gave birth to a daughter in September. In early 2013, Martin returned from her hiatus with a music video for &#8220;Place de la r\u00e9publique&#8221;, the first for which she acted as director, and an international tour beginning in March. She also revealed that she was currently working on a &#8220;totally different&#8221; English-language project after being approached by a label and artistic director and had already recorded some demos.<\/p>\n<h2>Awards<\/h2>\n<p>C\u0153ur de pirate received a 2009 <a title=\"CBC Radio 3\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CBC_Radio_3\">CBC Radio 3<\/a> &#8220;<a title=\"Bucky Awards\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bucky_Awards\">Bucky<\/a>&#8221; award determined by listener votes.
